Academic Information
Reading:
We will be using a balanced literacy approach.
Students are taught a skill during our whole group mini-lesson prior to breaking out into small groups. These small groups will rotate Monday -Friday. and will consist of :
*Guided reading with me~this is a time I will be working on targeted reading and or comprehension skills in a small group setting
*Skill practice~students will work on targeted skills for the week (this will usually be word work)
*Media Center~students must have a book to read at all times. They will have one day a week during reading workshop time to visit the media center. Other available times will be during recess or if assigned work is completed. See information on Accelerated Reader Program below.
*Reading and Responding~students will read silently and respond in their journal. Students are also allowed to take AR tests during this time
The Accelerated Reader Program is an integral part of our reading program. This program measures student comprehension on a book they have read in their pre-determined range. The students will take a vocabulary/comprehension test at the beginning of the year in order to determine their specific level or "range". NOTHING will help students read better than practicing reading every single day!! Each student will be required to earn 17.5 points each nine weeks with at least 74% accuracy. They will have time to read every day at school. Children having difficulty reaching the 17.5 points will be able to join my "book club" during recess.
•Duncan Creek has adopted a consistent rubric to grade reading to account for a child’s development and growth in specific areas of reading. Your child’s reading grade will include the following components of reading:
Reading Level
Fluency Development
Comprehension
Reading Skills Practice
Assessments
GCPS Interim Assessment
GCPS Post Test
Writing/Grammar:
Writing and grammar skills will be taught through mini-lessons. I will be using many mentor texts to show how authors use writing and grammar skills. This allows children to make a connection to the skill as opposed to using a skill in isolation. We will be doing a LOT of writing this year!
Word Study / Spelling:
The three components of the word study program will be comprised of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary.
Math:
Our math program will work similar to our reading and writing workshop. I will have a whole group skill lesson each day. Then the students will break into small groups that will rotate throughout the week. Students will also be keeping a math journal.
The domains to be covered this year will be number and operations, measurement, geometry, algebra, and data analysis and probability.
Social Studies:
We will travel back in time to the Native American culture 12,000 years ago! Our travels will end with the beginning of the Civil War. We have a lot of history to cover! History will be our main focus along with geography, civics/government, and economics.
Science:
We will be studying Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science. We will begin the year with a study of water and weather.
County weighted grading policy for academic areas other than reading and writing:
Tests- 49.5%
Classroom Assessment- 49.5%
DDA- 1%
Work habits/Conduct- Students receive check in their Friday folder when they have trouble following rules or returning homework. These checks will impact their Conduct grade for the end of the 9 weeks. Students will start with a grade of 100 and 2 points will be deducted for each check the student receives.
